Long exposure night photography of the NC State Fair captures the zips, zooms, and revolutions of the rides as ribbons and splashes of color. The landscape looks a bit wild, but beautiful. Such is life isn’t it?

Here are a few life lessons that can be found at the NC State Fair.

1. Indulge your soul and senses

In our culture, we encourage people to be good to themselves with the salutation, “take care.” But what does self-care really imply? There are a lot of articles online that characterize self care as disciplined practices such as yoga, meditation, and journaling. But there’s also power in leaning towards indulgence and whimsy sometimes.

Let yourself free and find delight in the sounds, tastes, and smells of the NC State Fair. Play with your kids. Enjoy a cotton candy with your partner if you’re craving it. Though low in nutrients, some indulgences- especially when shared with those you love- nourish the soul.

2. Appreciate life’s seasons and their impermanence

The NC State Fair is fleeting; it seems that just as soon as the ornate carousels, carts, ‘coasters and seven-hundred pound pumpkins are set up, they’re taken down and traveling to the next town. But if the fair remained all year, it might not feel so special as the novelty wears off.

Emotional “seasons” come and go as well. Some periods are filled with joy and excitement while others bring stress or sorrow. It can be comforting knowing that our low points won’t last forever. It’s also important to savor good times as these are impermanent as well. The change in seasons teaches us to appreciate the cool breeze after a sweltering summer, rain after a dry spell, and warmth after winter.

3. Change Your Viewpoint

I believe the Ferris Wheel provides one of the best vantage points of the NC State Fair fairgrounds. When you reach the peak, your stomach may dip a bit, and for a brief second you feel on top of the world. There’s a thrill in this vast perspective.

Often, we’re so bogged down by life’s details and duties that we forget the big picture. Stepping back and looking out can help reconnect us to our sense of fulfillment and purpose. What kinds of things excite you? What are your hopes and dreams? Using your imagination and letting yourself be inspired will add vitality and energy to your daily life and to your relationships.
